Chief Building Official Information:
All decks require building Permits. Some property owners have incorrect information about the requirements for Building Permits relating to decks. For example:
“Deck is not attached to house” – Building Permit is required.
“I’m replacing/repairing an existing deck” - Building Permit is required.
“My deck is less than 24” above the ground” - Building Permit is required.
“My deck is only a small landing and stairs at my door” - Building Permit is required.
“I’m adding a new railing/stairway/extension/etc to my deck” - Building Permit is required.
If you are planning to build or change a deck, check with the Building Official whether you need a permit. Don’t rely on others for this information.
